Modern Muses is a conceptual fashion editorial by Raya van der Kroon, reinterpreting ancient mythological women into contemporary icons of female empowerment. Approaching the concept of Jungian archetypes through the female gaze, these Modern Muses express four core values of the female identity anno 2021, introducing the
Queen, Diva, Lover and Carer.
The Queen is inspired by Hippolyta, the ancient Amazonian warrior leader, reclaiming Power. The Diva is based on the West African mermaid Goddess Mami Wata, encouraging the theme of self-value. The Lover transforms the story of Freyja, the Norse Goddess of Fertility, as an icon of intimacy and sexuality. Lastly, the Carer has her roots with the Japanese supernatural beast Futakuchi-onna, expressing mindfulness.
